The Fashion of White Lotus Season 3 – Where to Shop for Your Favourite Outfits
We are all travel mood at the moment and this is thanks to the White Lotus. The last episode of Season 3 has just aired and apart from the beautiful views of Thailand and the drama, the fashion is a highlight as well. And while the outfits are very nice to look at, they also tell us a lot about each character. I did some digging for you and put together the best White Lotus Season 3 outfits and where you can shop the exact items or some similar alternatives.
You can also watch my video here:
Background about the Costume Design
The costume designer Alex Bovaird worked with a big variety of brands to create the White Lotus universe. The hotel is a luxury resort and luxury is also reflected in the fashion of the well-to-do guests. We see the “classics” such as the European brands Valentino or Hermès but also never European brands such as the social media hype-creator Jacquemus. Furthermore, Bovaird worked with smaller brands such as Hong Kong-based Marie France Van Damme, Corsican swimwear label Tara Matthews and the Australian Zimmermann and Alémais and also Turkey-based My Beachy Side or Poupette St. Barth. She also paid tribute to the host country, Thailand, and worked with local Thai silk brand Jim Thompson. (If you want to learn more about this brand and the mysterious disappearance of its founder in the Malaysian jungle, you can read my article here.)
The fashion contributes to each individual character – Jaclyn, the actress, enjoys the spotlight and draws everyone’s attention to her with her glitzy outfits. Piper, who comes to Thailand to find herself, looks innocent and almost childish, until she tries to break out from her family, she tries at least. The spiritual Chelsea expresses herself with a mix of beachy market finds, vintage and high-end luxury and Chloe wants to make sure everyone knows about her past on the runway – no matter if it really happened or not.
A lot of the exact items have sold out – this is often due to the time lag until TV shows and movies are aired but also because many people have fallen in love with the resort style of the show and probably immediately went online and browsed for the fashion. Nevertheless, it is still interesting to look at them, firstly, because of the previously mentioned role to bring the characters to life. But also because there are some interesting alternatives available and it may also be a great way to discover brands we did not know previously.
One last thing before we start: In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bovaird shared her style tips for holidays in Thailand and of all things, she mentions elephant pants. She even added: “[…][G]ive into them!” No! There is no giving into the elephant pants! For those of you who do not know them, these pants look like pajama pants and have an elephant pattern. They are mostly sold at souvenir stores or the entrances of temples, as many tourists arrive in clothing which does not cover their knees. To put it diplomatically, they are unflattering. If you want the more direct version, they are hideous. I have spent a lot of time in Thailand and whenever I see tourists proudly parading their elephant pants, I would love to run over and tell them to change. Furthermore, many locals are no fans of these pants either and I mostly only see them on tourists. Therefore, I would like to clarify: In daily life in Thailand, you will hardly see anyone wear them – except tourists. If you aspire the lifestyle of the people in White Lotus, i.e. hang out at exclusive hotels, you have even less reason to wear these pants.
Now that we have clarified this also, let’s jump right in.
Jaclyn, Kate and Laurie
The friends are the fashionable trio of the show. They remind us of the “cool girls” in high school, maybe even like the “Plastics” in “Mean Girls”. They even look the same – all of them are blonde and at first sight, their outfits look similar. But there are details which relate to the traits of each character.
Jaclyn
Jaclyn (middle) in an Alémais dress.
When the friends arrive at the White Lotus in episode 1, Jaclyn wears a cute Alémais dress – we will see quite a few items by the Australian label throughout the show. She carries a Valentino half-moon shaped bag in white with a gold chain with the V-logo in the middle. We also see a lot of Valentino on the three ladies throughout season 3. Her wedge sandals are Chanel.
Jaclyn’s beach “cover-up” is actually a dress from the Chanel 2006 runway.
Speaking of Chanel: Jaclyn’s beach look in episode 1 looks “easy”, but it is also very expensive. Her bathing suit is a classic by Eres – the exact model in that colour is sold out but here is an alternative. Their Cyclades model is also nice, it is almost like Jaclyn’s model, I like the double strap and details in the back and it is available in other colours. Unfortunately, Her colourful cover-up is a actually a dress from the Chanel 2006 runway. It was available on 1stDibs but has been sold for over USD 5,000.
Jaclyn wears another vintage find for a dinner.
Her dress with dragon embroidery is vintage as well.
Her Valentino sequin dress shows how much she loves the spotlight.
Jacylin’s Valentino sequin dress which she wears for the evening performance of episode 2 is probably one of the most searched-for dresses of the show. It really shows her character: The glitzy actress who loves the spotlight and who also wants to prove that she still is desirable. Unfortunately, all my online searching has not resulted in finding the exact dress, I also could not find out if it was vintage or a custom design for the show.
The green silk kaftan is by Pin-Up Stars.
In episode 3 Jacylin wears a beautiful green kimono by Pin-Up Stars. I really like the shades of green, unfortunately it is sold out on their website. (They still have a blue and white version.) Her watch is by Hermès and I found it on 1stDibs.com for about USD 13,000.
Jaclyn stands out, even when she exercises.
Her yoga outfit is by Aditi. Lululemon is also worn on the show which is a bit expected – she is an actress, into yoga, lives in LA. But Aditi is interesting, not only because of the looks and prints but also because it is made from ECONYL – if you have read my article about the Prada Re-Nylon bag, this may ring a bell, it is the same recycled nylon as the one used for the Prada bag.
Jaclyn in a set by Poupette St. Barth (the original comes with a shirt, a crop top and the matching shorts).
In episode 4, the three friends venture out for some adventures outside of the resort. Jaclyn wears a blue ensemble by Poupette St. Barth (the exact one is sold out but I found a similar one in a different shade of blue and an ensemble in green) and her sunglasses could either be Jacques Marie Mages sunglasses or Oliver Peoples/Brunello Cuccinelli.
Logos are a signature detail of Jaclyn’s wardrobe.
The actress, is the loudest of three in terms of logos – in episode 6 she wears a big Gucci bucket hat (you will have to search on resale platforms for this), a pink floral kaftan by Poupette St. Barth (sold out) and a suede tote bag by Bottega Veneta. (I could not find the exact model and colour, but the Hop model comes quite close in another colour.) Her bikini is by Same, while the striped pink version is sold out, it is available in other colours and I found a close match in black and white.
Swimsuit by Same, silk print shirt by Valentino.
She also wears Same in episode 2, a white swimsuit with black trim and pairs it with a cream Valentino shirt with red print (sold out). Her animal print swimsuit is by Valentino and, again, I need to tell you that you have to search for an opportunity on resale platforms.
Jaclyn’s animal print swimsuit is Valentino.
In the last episode 8, Jaclyn wears an Etro wrap skirt with a cactus print, unfortunately, I have not found this one online. She also wears a printed Hermès shirt and the same Hermès watch I mentioned before. It may be vintage and if you like the style I suggest you search on Vestiaire or ebay. Her dark teal satin dress is by Zadig and Voltaire and, unfortuntately, also sold out. But her floral dress with lace trims by Doen is still available in some sizes on Net-A-Porter.
Kate
In terms of fashion, Kate is one of the best – in terms of fashion only, not necessarily when it comes to her attitude towards friendships and views.
Kate in Paul Smith.
Upon arrival the three friends all wear light summer dresses, Kate’s is Paul Smith (sold out).
Kate in a Valentino swimsuit and sarong.
When they enjoy drinks, they wear designer swimwear and coverups. Kate wears a Valentino bathing suit in pink and a Valentino sarong. I did not find the exact pink bathing suit, but there is a black and a white version at Luisaviaroma.
Red dress by Lanvin.
In the evening, Kate makes a bold fashion statement in a beautiful red Lanvin dress which I found on Yoox.
On the night when Jaclyn wears the glitzy Valentino mini-dress, Kate also shines in a silver and black striped kaftan by the Hong Kong-label Marie France van Damme.
Kate in a cute Waimari bralette.
Kate also does not shy away from showing skin and looks great in a white bralette with floral appliqués by Waimari in episode 3.
One of my favourites: printed shirt by Alémais.
I also like the print shirt she wears in the evening by Alémais. The twisted gold earrings are by Polène. They are sold out but you can achieve the same effect by just using other big gold earrings.
The three American friends in activewear.
Also Kate exercises in style, like Jaclyn’s black print outfit, her set is also by the Italian label Aditi (I prefer Kate’s set).
The Alémais cut-out dress is a true eye-catcher.
Kate’s dress on their “adventure” is Alémais and it is one of the highlights of the show. Her understated swimsuit is Valentino. Priced USD 1,200 it is exclusive, it is also Valentino, but in contrast to Jaclyn, Kate is not that much into logos.
Bikini by Juillet.
In episode 6, Kate wears a bikini top by Juillet, it is called Lulu. The bottoms are by the same brand and are called Luisa. Both are available for preorder at the time of publishing this article.
Zimmermann Bikini paired with yellow linen pants.
In episode 8, Kate wears a set in yellow tones – her bikini is by Zimmermann (maybe you are lucky to grab the last one) and she pairs it with yellow linen pants which look like these.
Her red dress with ruffles is by Waimari (sold out) and her asymmetric bathing suit with a graphic pattern is by Oas.
Laurie
One of the best Laurie looks and one of the best of the show: Zimmermann dress and Loewe bag.
When the three friends arrive at the White Lotus, Laurie wears this really pretty Zimmermann dress, I tracked it down on ebay. Her bag is Loewe.
Laurie may not be an actress, but she still gives us interesting fashion moments.
Later she wears a vintage Sue Wong jumpsuit and a Giambattista Valli bag.
Silk kimono with palm print in the back by Tara Matthews.
I really like Laurie’s silk kimono in episode 1 which is by Tara Matthews, her swimsuit is Zimmermann (sold out).
Laurie is interested in fashion but never looks as polished as her two friends.
She wears Tara Matthews again in episode 3 (a tank top) and in episode 4 – a purple silk dress with peonies – which she matches with a Helen Kaminski hat. While Laurie also wears similar or the same brands as her two friends, she never looks as polished as them. Her hair is always a bit messier, the combinations are not as curated – this dress and hat are actually proof of that.
Another obvious example are the ladies’ yoga outfits – the other two wear Aditi or Lululemon, she wears Reebok, again, functional, pretty, but not as fashion-forward.
Maybe the costume designer wants to show that she is more real. It reminded me a bit of Miranda in Sex and the City. We also see how she struggles with her career and life – her friends make comments that make it seem she was never really happy with the choice. I think the costume design made her intentionally look that way to show her inner conflict. But I do have one thing to say here: Why are the career women never looking as great as their “gold digger” or actress-friends? I know hugely successful women who run companies and they look amazing, polished, not as sloppy. Maybe this is something for future series to think about.
Laurie in a flowy Bella Freud dress.
Nevertheless, Laurie is also interested in fashion. One of her most flattering looks is the yellow Bella Freud dress in episode 3 and I am a big fan of her Johanna Ortiz dress she wears by the pool. Unfortunately, it is sold out but it is always worth to check out Ortiz’s designs.
Laurie in Johanna Ortiz whose designs are perfect for a trip to the tropics.
Her Goyard mini backpack is another hint at her success and it also matches very well with them coming across as “Americans” because Goyard enjoys more popularity in America than in Europe.
During the fight in episode 6, she wears a Tara Matthews swimsuit, her sunglasses are L.G.R.
In the last episode 8, Laurie wears a silk print top which I could not trace down and David Webb earrings – it again shows us her status and how successful she is without being too branded. The enamel and diamond earrings cost over USD 40,000. We see David Webb also on other characters, for example on Victoria Ratcliff, but the statement is a very different one. While Victoria comes from money, or married into it, Laurie made her money herself.
Chloe
Chloe wears custom Jacquemus on the boat trip.
Chloe is a former model who walked on the runways in Paris – or at least this is the story she sells and she emphasizes this through her fashion choices. On the boat she wears custom Jacquemus, this is probably one of the most recognized looks of the character.
The second custom Jacquemus look.
In episode 1 she also wears custom Jacquemus – a black and white mini dress. I think it is quite fitting that Bovaird chose Jacquemus for Chloe and also Chelsea. It is a heavily hyped brand, and is probably also very popular among young women who aspire to have a lifestyle Chloe and Chelsea.
We see Chloe in Hunza G swimsuits, for example the green one on the boat and My Beachy Side coverups. She shows us one thing: all of the guests are well-off, the White Lotus which is a Four Seasons in real life, is an ultra-luxury resort, therefore, you get a certain crowd. But within this group of rich people you see how their style shows different dimensions: The Ratcliffs are the typical rich WASP family. Jaclyn and her friends are all well-off but they also show the style of the cities or states they live in – Jaclyn L.A., Laurie New York and Kate Texas. Chloe was most likely not born into money like the Ratcliff children, but by dating Gary she is now “one of them” or even richer and she also shows that she is the Queen B through her outfits. The Ratcliffs obvisouly do not like new money but Chloe probably does not care about this and even invites them on their boat. Her outfits are trendy and as they are also quite revealing, they may imply that maybe she really was not really a model who met Gary through a matchmaking service.
Chloe’s fashion reflects her past as a “model”.
Even though Gary´owns a villa with a massive pool overlooking the ocean, Chloe is a regular at the White Lotus poolside. In episode 2, her beaded beach dress is by My Beachy Side and the zebra-patterned bag is by Jacquemus.
In episode 3, Chloe chills by the pool of the White Lotus in an orange Hermès bikini. (The exact one is one Vestiaire Collective but has been sold.) Her round sunglasses are Raybans.
Her bikini in episode 5 is Hunza G which is a bit tricky to find online in that colour. I found it on one site with one piece remaining, hence, it may have sold out by the time the video is published. The model is available in several other colours. And again, she wears My Beachy Side, this time it is the crochet mini skirt. In episode 8 she wears an Oceanus-bikini.
My favourite Chloe-outfit is one which may be overlooked – it is a set by Agua by Bendita in episode 2.
The most interesting outfit in terms of how it contributes to the characters story is her party outfit in episode 6. She wears a vintage Versace dress from 1993. Her hoops are by Completedworks and are from their Crumple line and her mules are by JW Anderson. This vintage Versace dress again is a statement – Chloe sells herself as the former model, Versace “invented” the supermodels in the 1990s and by wearing this garment she not only shows that she can afford expensive vintage fashion but also that she also belongs to the model crowd.
Chelsea
Chloe and Chelsea become friends because they both they older men, but they are actually quite different, not only in terms of fashion but also character. Already upon arrival we can tell what type of character Chelsea is just by looking at her clothes. Her crochet mini dress by My Beach Side (you see, the label is a regular) gives of this vibe – boho, party, yoga. She keeps repeating that Rick, her much older boyfriend, is her soulmate.
The ever-positive Chelsea arrives in a My Beachy Side crochet dress and a necklace with an important meaning.
Her signature dog tag necklace is by Luna Flo London, studded with diamonds and is about USD 5,101. The line “Stay Gold” is taken from “The Outsiders”:
“Stay gold, Ponyboy, Stay Gold”. And this line actually refers to the poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost.
“Nature’s first green is gold, / Her hardest hue to hold. / Her early leaf’s a flower; / But only so an hour. / Then leaf subsides to leaf. / So Eden sank to grief, / So dawn goes down to day. / Nothing gold can stay.”[1]
According to the brand, the piece is a reminder to “hold onto the goodness within, to find beauty in the world despite hardships, and to never lose sight of who you are”[2].
This fits really well to Chelsea’s attitude. She is spiritual and tries to see the good in her partner Ricky who has a difficult past. She even convinces him to do sessions with Amrita, the therapist of the hotel. She never loses sight of who she is, even during the crazy party night, she stays true to herself. At first, Chelsea seems like a superficial gold-digger with a boho twist. But throughout the show, she convinces the viewers of her character and shows that she really cares about her partner. I also really like that they cast Aimee Lou Wood for the role – I am a big fan of actresses who do not fit the mold and it is really cool to see a beautiful woman with teeth which do not correspond to the Hollywood standard, meaning overly straightened and bleached.
Also Chelsea’s beachwear reflects her boho lifestyle.
Chelsea heads to the pool where she meets Chloe and is hit on by Saxon. She wears a red bikini by Tara Matthews, her crochet bag is JW Anderson, it is called Popcorn and sold out in orange but you can find it in other colours. The leopard print sunglasses are Jacqemus.
It is no surprise that Chelsea wears vintage – but it is a different type than Chloe’s expensive archival dress. Her vintage items look like special market finds and she pairs them with contemporary designers such as JW Anderson.
What is also typical of a character like her is that she wears a lot of vintage – like a red top with the cool details on the straps or her coverup in episode 4 which she pairs with a JW Anderson crochet bag in rainbow colours.
People were speculating online about her coconut bikini top – it was also vintage by Los Feliz, a vintage store in Barcelona. They posted about it to solve the mystery, so I assume that the costume designer sourced from there. And again, the skirt is My Beachy Side.
She also pairs a Miss Bikini swim set with Valentino sunglasses (I found the pink version of them).
Chelsea’s boho style is a mix of vintage, market finds, small labels and luxury brands.
She looks “boho”, but her outfits are far from being “cheap”. We see that, for example in season 7 where she carries a Valentino Locò bag with fringes, which is sold out, but model in silver with rhinestones is a close match. Her shoes with a big bow are by Giuseppe Zanotti. Her dress may be McQ by Alexander McQueen.
Alex Bovaird costume designer said that her favourite costumes were those for the “duos” – Olivia and Paula in Season 1, Mia and Lucia in Season 2 and Chloe and Chelsea in season 3. For the latter, Bovaird collaborated with American artist Scooter LaForge who designed hand-painted T-shirts for the girls party scenes.[3]
Piper Ratcliff
Piper cannot hide her WASP-background – she visits the monastery in a Ralph Lauren floral print dress.
The fashion also shows how Piper Ratcliff is lost between this WASP-lifestyle and her new-found faith in Buddhism. But it also hints at the hypocrisy: She does not need much, yet she happily wears some dresses for USD 500 to USD 1,000, like the printed one by Zimmermann. They dresses are low-key, like the ivory one in episode 1, but still, the reason to visit Thailand as she wants to spend a year at a Buddhist monastery – or at least she thinks she wants to do that. When she visits the monastery, she arrives in a blue dress with floral pattern by Ralph Lauren, really cute and summery but, again, it shows at her status. The cream-coloured dress she wears on the trial day at the monastery in episode 6 is also by Ciao Lucia, it is already sold out but you can sign up for the restock notification.
The swimsuit colour gives a clue about her plans in episode 2.
Her bathing suit in episode 2 hints at her plans of joining the Buddhist monastery, as the orange colour reflects the traditional garment of the monks. (The bathing suit is by Monday Swimwear but is not on their page anymore.) Like Chloe and Chelsea, she wears My Beachy Side like her blue top in episode 3.
Piper looks innocent yet preppy in the many different white/cream cotton dresses.
On the boat trip in Episode 4, Piper wears a pretty white cotton dress with black or navy stripes. It immediately gives us sailing, the stripes reference the French fishermen who also inspired Coco Chanel. The dress is by Ciao Lucia, similarly, it is sold out but you can currently preorder it, the shoes are by Jimmy Choo.
When Piper throws her plans out of the window, she shows her “real” character also through her outfits.
One of my favourites on her is a dark magenta dress by Alicia Bell in episode 8 which makes her look very grown-up, but also hints at how she may have changed her mind about her plans. In the white dresses she looked innocent and almost like a child still.
The blue Waimari ensemble is a highlight of Season 3.
With the purple dress and also the blue Waimari ensemble (sold out) in episode 8 in blue with the sequins, she goes back to her “real” character.
Piper wears vintage Pucci when leaving Thailand.
Her Pucci ensemble on the boat is vintage from the early 2000s. I really like that one. Worn on TV listed a similar ensemble by Antonio Melani if you are interested in the style.
Victoria Ratcliff
The Southern WASP-Queen arriving at the White Lotus.
Their mother Victoria Ratcliff tells us who she is from the first moment onwards – a Southern lady, a bit uptight, with the typical WASP-style suited for the country club. She arrives with her white mini Gucci bamboo bag and a silk scarf by the London-based heritage brand Swaine in episode 1. (Her dress is Banana Republic but it is sold out.) She uses her bag mainly to carry around her Loooraaaazzzzeeeepaaaam – I think I also spotted a yellow Louis Vuitton bucket bag, but I have not been able to confirm that yet.
Victoria also wears the Thai brand Jim Thompson.
Her green and white and green dress with ruffles is also Jim Thompson, it is from a previous collection and it is not available at the moment.
This leads me to a fun detail about Victoria – she has this preppy style but she also wears smaller labels, which she then mixes with ultra-luxury accessories (see below the necklace in episode 7). She also wears local brands like Jim Thompson, which is premium but not very known outside of Thailand. Furthermore, she also wears quite a few dresses by Rachel Comey, a Brooklyn-based designer. At first sight, it seems a bit strange that a Southern lady with her attitude and values would wear that but maybe it shows that she is actually quite clued on, at least in terms of fashion.
Throughout the season, Victoria wears quite a few Rachel Comey dresses.
For the boat trip in Season 4, Victoria wears a print Rachel Comey dress – the exact one is not online anymore, they have one in green with a similar cut, but the feel is a bit different.
Victoria again in Jim Thompson.
In episode 6, Victoria wears a silk kaftan by the Thai brand Jim Thompson paired with her Gucci bamboo bag and a Louis Vuitton Keep it Twice padlock bracelet.
This outfit embodies Victoria’s style: green suit by Cynthia Rowley paired with a Jim Thompson scarf and David Webb jewellery.
Her green suit in episode 7 is by Cynthia Rowley, I found it on eBay. The necklace by David Webb is another statement of her status – which she is about to lose. It is almost USD 300,000. Her silk scarf by Jim Thompson with a river scene is inspired by Asian art – it has the signature characteristics like the 2D-effect, the mix of perspectives and dimensions and the style is like the artwork we see in the intro of the show.
Victoria also wears quite a few shirt dresses.
In the last episode 8, she wears a really cool blue-printed shirt dress by Corey Lynn Calter, but it is already sold out. It is available with a different print and colour.
Her dress for the last evening is by Lanvin.
Her long yellow dress with white and blue dots is by Lanvin, I could not track the exact one down but I found a similar short Lanvin wrap-dress. Her Kaftan looks like Jim Thompson, but it is currently not on their website.
Belinda
We mainly see Belinda in kaftans, robes and dresses. One of my favourites is the one in episode 2 by Jim Thompson with a cockatoo-print.
Belinda in a set by Johnny Was, a label which she wears multiple times.
In episode 2 she wears a Kimono set with matching pants by Jonny Was, unfortunately it is sold out, similarly the beautiful kaftan from episode 8 in blue tones with flowers also by the same brand.
But the silk cover-up in episode 3 also by Johnny Was is still available online.
At Gary’s and Chloe’s party, Belinda wears a pink and green kaftan by Verandah. I really like it but one thing does not make sense in my opinion: Belinda is the only guest who does not belong to the social strata of the usual White Lotus guest – yet. The Verandah kaftan is USD 1,200 – is this realistic for somebody who works in a spa and wants to start their own business? Or maybe it was just the look overall which the costume designer wanted to achieve. Her Lilly Pulitzer kaftan is a bit more realistic (episode 8).
Green kaftan by Verandah.
Her second kaftan by Verandah in green with a paisley print is available for pre-order.
A nice detail is her Thai kaftan by J Peterman which is vintage. The white kaftan with parrot print is by Carolina K.
I also find the Christine kimono silk robe really beautiful (episode 5).
Mook
We usually see her in her work uniform, in the few scenes outside of the hotel, we see that Mook dress also corresponds to her (dated) values – her style is cute and summery and makes her look a bit innocent.
The coral-print dress is by Bangkok-based fashion brand Mitr (called “mit”, the “r” is silent) which means “friendly” in Thai. Someone like Mook would wear a local brand and the style is very much aligned with what is on trend in Thailand at the moment.
Sritala
Sritala’s style is very unique – it is based on kaftans and dresses with interesting prints with an arty vibe and she pairs them with big accessories.
The glamorous Sritala owns the hotel and it looks as if her outfits are custom Jim Thompson (Patravadi Mejudhon who is Sritala in the show wore custom Jim Thompson at one of the premieres), vintage or from the personal collection of Patravadi Mejudhon. I am currently doing more research and will update this section soon!
